Picker Institute Always Events℠

Picker has determined that an operating principle focused on the concept of Always Events℠ can be implemented to drive the system to become more patient-centered. In contrast to the well-known “never events,” patient-focused Always Events are aspects of the patient and family experience that should always occur when patients interact with healthcare professionals and the healthcare delivery system.

What are some important Always Events?

Picker Institute invites you to assist us in driving the healthcare system to become

more patient-centered by letting us know what you believe should be
included in a list of important Always Events℠.

"Always events is a concept that resonates with every group. People immediately understand and respect the power behind making a commitment to doing something for every patient, every time. Always events emphasize the positive and can bring out the best in any organization by focusing attention and resources on what matters most." C. Brady

Healthcare Professionals and Patient Advocates have highlighted the following as important Always Events:
  • Patients and visitors are always greeted with a warm and friendly smile and greeting.
  • Quality of Life should be discussed alongside quality of care to promote informed patient and family decision making.
  • Always wash hands after touching things in the room and immediately before touching me…nothing touched in between!
The last patients germs and the germs in the room have less chance of being carried directly to me.
  • “Is there anything else I can do for you” should always be asked with every patient and family encounter.
  • Wouldn’t it be great if every patient always received a printed after-visit summary at the end of each medical appointment?
  • For health professionals – ALWAYS clearly define who you are. Don’t stop at what the complaint is, continue to inquire if there’s anything else – appreciative inquiry is the key – both at the beginning and at the end of any healthcare provider/patient meeting.
  • Validate and verify the patients name and M/R number on all patients, all the time. Never deviate from this practice, even if it is someone you know. The patient will feel confident knowing you care enough to always get it right.
